Long before the lockdown struck, Londoners were obsessed with IKEA. Also, when at a moment’s notice, we all unexpectedly needed proper WFH setups, this became even more important to us. Since then, they have opened their car parks for mass Eid prayers, become NHS workers’ coronavirus test sites, taught us how to make blanket forts, and revealed the super-secret recipe for their famous meatballs. Today, on the last of those they are going a step further, and making vegan meatballs for the very first time!
As much as part of an IKEA trip as leaving with a Billy bookcase and cocktail glasses that you’re never going to use, IKEA’s most popular snack was previously only available as meatballs, or veggie balls that simply don’t live up to the meat variety. Yet now, with their plant-based bonafides, the homeware chain is confident enough that they are launching the Plant Balls-a plant-based meatball that promises to taste just like the real thing.
With ingredients such as oats, potatoes, onion, apple, and yellow pea protein – with the likes of mushrooms, tomatoes, and roasted veg providing the umami hit – the Plant Balls have been engineered to look and taste as close to the meatballs as possible. Better still, all the ingredients are being sustainably sourced, making the vegan meatballs very eco-friendly. You’ll be able to get your hands on them from August 3 in their bistros or Swedish food halls, but they won’t be in IKEA restaurants until October 26. We have waited this long, so what’s another couple of months, eh?
